Southern California has lots of DUGs. Community leaders in the area have often talked of banding resources to create a stronger Drupal presence here in SOCAL, but what exactly does that mean? Lets talk it over and get some ideas out on the table and think big about what we could do with the resources available to the region at large. What would you do with lots of community support?

Here’s my idea…
I’d like to attract traveling Drupalers and show them what our local community has to offer. If they like what they see, they’re that much more likely to come back for camps, sprints and other events. But how do we accommodate everyone’s busy schedule while still getting the reach we need for a region this large? What if we could coordinate some of our DUG meeting to fall on consecutive dates so that any traveling Drupaler who may be passing through could hit up 3 or 4 meetings in a week? That could mean a lot more good outside speakers at our DUGs, which is good for everyone.

…So that’s just one thought, but this is a BoF of course. We want to hear what you have to say! Come join up and talk with us about how we can unify our regional Drupal presence.

Guests love speaking at LA DRUPAL

Submitted by Chris Charlton on Thu, 2011-07-28 13:36.

I think coordinating invited special guests to do SoCal DUG Tours makes perfect sense. We can definitely share ideas. For example, special guests who are in town and speak at LA DRUPAL are always impressed at how professional & enjoyable the experience is. The crowd is always a good mix, and

For higher-skilled local talent I’ve felt online should be really looked for those types of topics – stuff people will need to watch over & over to learn and/or follow step-by-step. I proposed last year that talent be paid for lengthy, online single-topic trainings – like “Building Advanced Apache Solr Search Plug-ins for Drupal” – I mean, that’s some beefy stuff for folks and I feel that talent should be paid for the quality & time involved. Now, of course I am not suggesting every session be paid for but there should be a list (we started one ages ago on GDO for topics) – and in that list the advanced stuff could be considered subject matter for pay. And, release the video for free online for all to consume and grow Drupal!

I’ll be there. :D

The idea of a California

Submitted by christefano on Thu, 2011-08-04 17:22.

The idea of a California Meetup Tour, or hopping from one meetup to another while traveling through California, would also be great for attendees. This is one of the reasons I proposed the Drupal California group:

   http://groups.drupal.org/california

To kick things off, I started a “Drupal user groups in California” wiki page:

   http://groups.drupal.org/california/drupal-user-groups

I’d love some help from volunteers and participants at the BoF to add content like this (even if it’s specific to Southern California, like the BoF is) and make the California group more useful to everyone, including attendees and presenters.
