Drupal in Spanish
This is a BoF for the Spanish-speaking Drupal community. As such, it will be conducted completely in Spanish (while I don’t want to dissuade English-speakers from attending & it isn’t meant to exclude anyone, it’s more of a heads-up). The goal is to meet each other & discuss ways that we can better serve the Spanish-speaking community.
Some of the goals, discussions & ideas:
1) I proposed, last year, that we translate/localize LADrupal.org into Spanish since Los Angeles (& most of SoCal has SO many Spanish-speakers, in an attempt to bring more Drupal goodness to the communities we live in/serve). Is this something that others see as beneficial to your local DUGs? Who’d be interested in assisting in its creation?
2) Part of the idea to translate LADrupal.org was to have a “sister user group” where community members would translate presentations from English to Spanish & vice or versa. I initially contacted a group in Central Mexico & the response was positive, however, with so many folks attending DCLA 2011 from Northern Mexico (Mexicali, etc.), I’d like to explore the possibility of building a bridge with folks who actually attend DCLA. Having done some research, though not exhaustive, it doesn’t seem that anything like this exists in the Drupal community yet so everyone’s input (regardless of your native language) would be greatly appreciated on not only the feasibility of such an endeavor (i.e. obstacles, etc.) but also of its value to the Drupal community, at-large.
3) Drupal User Group (DUG) in Spanish. Again, an idea I bounced off a few folks last year that I think would benefit many local DUGs. Initially, it’s to create a Spanish DUG here in Los Angeles. With the Spanish-speaking community in LA nearing 50%, I feel it’d be an invaluable resource for Spanish-speakers, community members & the larger Drupal community to embark on this project & see it to fruition. What do fellow community members think? Should we pilot it in LA & see how it performs? Could we lay a framework for other DUGs that have large populations of non-English speakers? If so, what about the details (organizers, venues, sponsors, presenters, etc.)?
4) Share any Drupal sites that you know of that are serving the Spanish-speaking community in meaningful & interesting ways (I could briefly talk about the Voces Mobiles Project- Vozmob).
I understand that this is a somewhat different topic for a BoF & that their isn’t much of a roadmap for these ideas/endeavors. But, hey, we’re the Drupal community & trailblazing is what we do! :)
Co-presenters are VERY welcome as are more ideas for this BoF so please feel free to comment or contact me. My hope is that this is an open discussion where anyone can participate (regardless of your command of the Spanish language) & not a discourse/presentation. I plan on taking notes & translating them into English for those who couldn’t attend but would like to get involved.
