In a cover article in Financial Planning magazine in the late 1990's, I disclosed that my in-kind investment in my advisory firm's Website was in excess of $60,000. When the magazine hit the desks of my competitor's I could hear a collective gasp. One of my closest friends in the industry called me and asked if I had lost my mind. Most retail advisors at the time still did not own a Website and those that did considered $500 a large investment.
By the time the market opened the next day my entire business practice had begun to change. My inbox was full of offers from small, medium, and large advisory firms to help them on their Website strategy and developments. Within minutes I knew my company was about to shift from being a competitor in the stock market to a competitor in the Internet market.
As a classically trained and award winning university business educator for the California State University System I have delivered over 4000 lectures on finance, marketing, project management, and management information systems.
